The Ark, the Reed, and the Fire Cloud
The Amazing Tales of Max and Liz

by Jenny L. Cote

Jenny L. Cote takes the three chapters of Genesis that deal with Noah and the flood and transforms it into a pleasing novel for readers 9-12 (but adults would like it too) in The Ark, the Reed, and the Fire Cloud.

Max, a Scottish terrier, takes his usual morning trot down to the loch where he hears a mysterious voice in the reeds saying, "Come to Me. . .follow the cloud."  This starts the travels of animals from all over the world to reach the ark in time for the Great Flood, even though the animals have no knowledge of the flood or why they are being summoned.

The various strategies used in reaching the ark make for entertaining reading.  One spectacular adventure after another occurs as Max and Liz, a brilliant cat from France, come up with plans for the safe arrival of the animals.

Although fictionalized, the story sticks close enough to the biblical account of the flood to be familiar with young and old readers.

The latter part of the novel deals with the behavior of the animals and Noah’s family during the time they waited for the flood to abate.  One incident deals with a creature that is determined to destroy the human race.  Can you guess which creature that is?

Young readers will enjoy Al the cat who lacks courage and loves to eat.  The romance between the pair of dogs and pair of cats will also appeal to young readers.
