Blood Captain
Vampirates #3
by Justin Somper
In this third book in the Vampirates series, twins Connor and Grace Tempest have separated and now serve on separate
ships. Grace is aboard the Vampirate ship, determined to help the vampire pirate, Lorcan, who lost his sight to save
her life. This trip to healing is going to take Grace to Sanctuary, a retreat where time-weary vampires can learn a
new way to live - a life outside the hunt for blood. Connor is aboard the Diablo, a ship of more "normal" pirates -
but it's no less dangerous, especially now. Captain Wrathe's warm reunion with an estranged brother is bringing its
own problems in the form of Wrathe's angry and unpredictable nephew, Moonshine. The novel is told in alternating
viewpoints between Connor and Grace as we follow both timelines at once. Despite being a thick novel at 569 pages,
the book is a surprisingly fast read with lively action, short chapters, and a fast pace. With pirates and vampires
involved, you expect violence, and certainly the series has it; but it never feels gratuitous, and the author doesn't
linger on the gore. Instead, the book is an adventure with all the thrills and gasps a reader could want, as well as
characters with enough depth and ambiguity to keep the reader caring and guessing. It's no surprise that this series
is a hit - it deserves to be. |
