The Cake Thief
Written and Illustrated by Sally O. Lee
Illustrated with bright, eye-catching paintings, The Cake Thief is the story of a loner named Clarence who
lives alone with his dog-like cat, Evelyn, and steals cakes. So the townspeople trick Clarence into learning to make
his own cakes. Despite the slim action inherent in the story, the creator does match the text with lots of colorful
paintings, including a painting of a shelf of books. I did very much like the illustration of Clarence skulking
around outside a window with his long, pointy nose vividly framed. The simple, angular lines and bold colors really
hold the attention of the small child. And the book has a bright, happy ending, which small children find comforting.
The vocabulary can occasionally be a bit challenging, but if you don't mind pausing to explain a word now and then,
I believe this would be a pleasant read-aloud for preschoolers. |
