Robbie Harris has written a very entertaining yet meaningful book entitled The Day Leo Said I Hate You!
Through the simple story about the day Leo says these terrible words to his mother, we get the idea of unconditional
love and how a parent can handle a delicate situation that requires sternness and love at the same time.
The reader experiences the frustration and anger that Leo undergoes as he hears the often repeated word between a
child and his parents, NO.
Of course these words sting the mother, but she uses the occasion to teach Leo that it is permissible to say, "I
hate broccoli" or any other non-human object, but when the words are said to a person, they hurt. As soon as the
words come out of Leo’s mouth, he wants to stuff them back. But just as in real life, when the words are out, there
is no taking them back.
Molly Bang brings the words of the story to life with her wonderful illustrations. Through Harris’s text and
Bang’s illustration we get an idea of the joy and sometimes sadness that goes on between a child and a parent.
This is a great book to teach the lesson all children need to learn: We simply do not say, "I hate you."
