Emmy and the Home for Troubled Girls

by Lynne Jonell
Illustrated by Jonathan Bean

Emmy is back along with her rodent friends in this sequel to Emmy and the Incredible Shrinking Rat. Emmy just wants to have some normal non-rodent friends and a normal non-rodent life, but it seems that every time she tries to make a new friend, a rodent pops up to talk. Emmy can speak rodent and with the help of her friend Ratty, she can shrink too. Emmy needs all of Ratty's magic when she discovers a new plot by the wicked Miss Balmy the rat. With its quick plot twists and turns, this sequel offers all the adventure and laughs of the first book. Emmy isn't the most likable of main characters but as she learns the importance of true friends and loyalty, we see a lot in her that rings true. This is an entertaining novel, even for those who missed Emmy's first adventure, and the ending has all the thrills anyone could ask for—definitely a keeper.
