The Final Warning
Maximum Ride, book 4
by James Patterson
Read by Jill Apple
For readers who have followed each of the books in the Maximum Ride series, The Final Warning will come as
something of a surprise. It's less of an adventure story and more of a cautionary novel about global warming. In
this novel, the genetically altered flock of "bird kids" is looking for a quiet place to settle for a while after
all the life threatening adventures up to now. And they're mutating - picking up interesting new abilities (which
Patterson probably plans to use in future books since none of them actually served any particular purpose in this
one, though they were cool.) Max's "mom" finds the flock the perfect place to chill: Antarctica. They can hide out
from any bad guys who may want to do them harm, and they can become the spokes-mutants against global warning. And
Patterson makes certain the flock (and anyone else reading) gets a clear and detailed overview of the global
warning issue. In fact, sometimes, the plot gets a bit lost in the lesson. Because of this, this particular novel
is a great one to listen to on audio. Jill Apple's reading is bright and lively, sounding very much like a
teen-aged girl, though maybe a bit perkier than we may have imagined for the snarky Max. And the process of
abridging the novel may have cut out a bit of a sermonizing - we can but hope. Still the bad guys, when they do
arrive hoping to sell the flock on auction, have huge potential (and I laughed out loud when the effects of global
warning saved the flock) and there are brief moments of the kind of all-out action adventure that have drawn so
many teens to this series. Plus, Apple does a hysterically funny reading for Total, the talking dog, and a
touchingly sweet voice for the youngest of the flock, Angel. In audio version, this is a highly entertaining
performance, but don't expect it to fit with the rest of the books in the series or you'll be disappointed. |
