Hanukkah

by Roni Scotter
Illustrated by Marylin Hafner

This beautiful little book tells the story of a family's celebration of the eight days of Hanukkah as Dan, Ruthie, Norah, Sam and baby Moe get ready for the yearly festival.  Grandma lights the candles on the menorah, Norah and Dan make latkes, and everyone begins their own preparations for the eighth and final day of Hanukkah...and oh, what a celebration it is. Baby Moe can't say Hanukkah, and Sam tries throughout the book to teach him to say the word. The whole family joins together to sing and dance and eat a great feast. Then at last, Grandma brings in her famous lemon cake and other treats.

Marilyn Hafner's bright illustrations are a visual celebration of the Jewish family's delightful holiday preparation.  The intricately detailed pictures convey the spirit of the story, and every time you look at the double page spread of each illustration, you see something that you missed before.

The story of Hanukkah, the Festival of Light and Dedication, is told on the last page of the book. Kids will learn how the Jewish people fought a king named Antiochus for the right to worship one God instead of the many Greek Gods, and the celebration of that victory.

Whether your family is Jewish or not, this book is a delight to read with its combination  of prose and poetry. Read Hanukkah aloud at family time, especially if your family is Jewish.. A great addition to your children's library for cultural awareness studies.
