Kyle’s First Play Date

by Leah Orr
Illustrated by Josephine Lepore

Kyle's First Playdate tells abut a whole day of adventures when Kyle is invited to Ashley Elizabeth's house for a play date. He is so excited, until he finds out that she has two sisters who will be playing with them. Every hour is filled with a new escapade as the kids play prince and princess, make brownies, go to the park and watch TV and have a parade.

Ashley Elizabeth has cystic fibrosis, a genetic disease and that is part of the story, with her taking time out to rest and take her medicine from a nebulizer. I think that most little boys would not tolerate being dressed as a princess, but Kyle does in the story.  Whimsical illustrations by Josephine Lepore set the text off to perfection. A photo of the real-life Ashley Elizabeth and her two sisters appears in the back of the book along with information about cystic fibrosis. The profits from the Kyle books will go to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Kyle's First Playdate would be a great addition to preschool and elementary curriculum. Read this aloud at bedtime or family time.  It’s sure to generate conversations about disabilities and to help encourage compassion and tolerance in your little ones.
