Little Bit & Big Byte
A Day at the Beach
by Craig T. Feigh
Illustrated by Patrick Carlson
Conceptually, the idea of introducing children to computer related terms through cartoon characters and a fun,
energy filled story is fantastic. Little Bit and Big Byte: A Day at the Beach is full of entertaining
pictures and bold colors that are just right for catching the interest of young readers. Moreover, kids enjoy
searching for things, and so bones hidden for Click, the dog, throughout the book are sure to please budding
detectives.
Little Bit & Big Byte relies mainly on puns based upon computer terms (Joy for Joystick, Browser the Cat
and so forth), and the interaction between these names provides the basis for the story. Unfortunately, there is
little or no explanation of the terms given (glossary or otherwise), which may prove to be a major stumbling block
for unenlightened parents. Without the proper background in vocabulary, the story becomes a bit confusing. However,
for computer enthusiasts confident in their ability to explain basic lingo and those who want to give as much
language exposure as possible related to computing, this is a cute story to add to your collection. |
