Max Gets It!
Can I Have Some Money? Volume 3
by Candi Sparks
Illustrated by William Graf
In Max Gets It! 10-year-old Max becomes a role model for responsible money use as he learns about earning,
saving and spending money. Max Gets It! provides a simple, non-threatening way to start a conversation with
an individual child who may have a case of the "gimmies," or to discuss spending with a classroom full of kids from
a variety of economic backgrounds. Kids with little money experience or financial savvy can easily grasp the concepts
presented because of the real life context—what kid doesn’t want a video game, and who hasn’t spent more than
they intended to at one time or another (young or old!)?
The premise in Max Gets It! is that kids can be responsible with money if: 1) they are given the chance;
and 2) they are given guidance as they learn the difference between the right way and the wrong way to use their
money, rather than facing criticism when they mess up. Concepts such as goal setting, budgeting and impulse buying
also figure prominently in the story. The book is also unique in that it features illustrations of characters with
African-American features. While it may not always be as easy for your child to earn money as it was for Max, overall
this book provides a great resource for your parent/teacher library. |
