No English

by Jacqueline Jules
Illustrated by Amy Huntington

Jacqueline Jules' newest picture book, No English, is a must for young readers. It tells the story of Blanca, a little girl from Argentina, who has come to the United States but doesn't speak English. One little girl, Diane, the narrator of the story, at first doesn’t understand why Blanca can draw during spelling class and she can't. Even though her teacher has tried to explain how lost Blanca must be feeling, Diane hurts Blanca's feelings more than once. With the help of a Spanish / English word book and some crayons, however, Diane and Blanca start to bridge the language gap and become fast friends. They also begin to learn a lot about each other.

Jacqueline Jules has always been able to tell a story with meaning. Her Ziz picture books have been delighting children with the antics of that loveable, gigantic, mythological bird. It was no wonder that when No English came into my hands, I was delighted. Once again Jules has told a story in simple terms that has profound meaning. The ability to see beyond differences and to find ways to communicate is a valuable talent. Diane finally is able to do just that and unlocks the priceless joy of friendship. Amy Huntington's watercolor illustrations add a lightness to the story. They are richly detailed and convey the emotion of the characters.

I am pleased to see Jacqueline Jules branching out into other areas of storytelling. She has handled the topic with sensitivity and creativity. I can't wait for her next offering. A little bird told me that the next installment in the Ziz books will be out later in the year.
