Our Walk in the Woods
by Charity Nebbe
Illustrated by Jeffrey Ebbeler
Charity Nebbe’s delightful book, Our Walk in the Woods, with its wonderful illustrations by Jeffrey Ebbeler,
has a somewhat different point of view than most books. First of all the book has two narrators, Abby the girl and
Kirby her dog. The narrators take turns telling the story, and like any story the view changes somewhat when seen
through the eyes of a different character. For example, when Abby finds trash and tries to pick it up, Kirby thinks
the trash is a delightful toy and fights for his right to play with it.
Then sometimes, Abby and Kirby tell the story in unison using the first person plural "we." For example, they say,
"We love to run down hills. It makes us feel like we are flying." There is no disagreement at this stage so both
characters relate this part of the story.
Each narrator explains to the reader his or her favorite part of the trip using the first person singular, and
then when the day is done and they are ready for home, they revert to the first person plural.
This back and forth change in point of view creates a sense of suspense, and the reader wants to find the next
instance of where the view changes. Overall, this is a wonderful story that should fascinate young readers. |
