A Picnic with The Barleys:
A Little Story About Courage and Forgiveness
Written / Illustrated by Karen Hunt
The second in a series, A Picnic with The Barleys takes us back to the land of cute, dressed mice - this
time with an adventure fraught with danger. The rich Rumpoles and country Barleys are going to a big country
picnic with many other mouse families. Prunella Rumpole has brought her beloved pink parasol and she's hesitant
to share it with her new country friends. When the parasol disappears, adventure ensues - including a daring
rescue of the parasol nabbing culprit from a weasel! This book has a great deal of plot for the short picture
book format, making some of the transitions a bit too sudden and confusing - the overall feeling is one of too
much stuff going on. The adventure is great and the "lesson" is valuable, but would have benefited from a
chapter book format instead of the much compressed picture book structure. As with the first book in the
series, the illustrations are lively, colorful, and charming. The illustrations at the picnic are especially
compelling because of the many details. I remember loving really detailed illustrations as a child and spent
hours poring over books to be certain I saw everything. The boggy pictures were wonderfully dark and creepy. My
eight year old especially enjoyed discussing the Scripture verse at the end of each of these books and how it
related to the story. |
