Piper Reed
The Great Gypsy
by Kimberly Willis Holt
Illustrated by Christine Davenier
Piper Reed: The Great Gypsy is a fabulous children's book. I enjoyed sharing Piper's experiences with her
school, her club, her sisters, and her father's service in the Navy. A fun book to read that children ages 8-11
will truly enjoy.
Before Pensacola, Piper Reed had lived many places including California, Texas, Guam, Mississippi, and New
Hampshire. Just when a place began to feel like home the moving van would show up and the Reed family would move
again. That's just the way life is in the Navy. Piper's dad is a Chief in the U.S. Navy and has just left for
ship duty. He will be gone for six long months.
Piper is in the fourth grade and a member of The Gypsy Club, a club that Piper had started when they lived in
San Diego. She is also the middle child with one older sister, Tori, and one younger sister, Sam. Piper decides
The Gypsy Club should have a dog show and she sets her sights on training the family dog, Bruna, to do all sorts
of amazing tricks. Turns out Bruna isn't quite as easy to train as Piper had thought she would be. Piper has
scheduled the dog show to be in the summer after her father returns from ship duty, and she's hoping to win the
trophy to impress him. |
