Priscilla and the Great Santa Search

by Nathaniel Hobbie
Illustrated by Jocelyn Hobbie

Just in time for the Christmas holiday, the brother / sister team of Nathaniel and Jocelyn Hobbie has published a delightful book in Priscilla and the Great Santa Watch.

The story evokes the magic of the Christmas season, with the world wrapped in a blanket of white, busy shoppers, and carolers.  However, a big part of Christmas is less than perfect—the Santa Clauses are fakes.

Priscilla and her friend Bettina decide to meet the real Mr. Claus.  The journey to the North Pole is entertaining and filled with adventure.  The author lets the girls make it to the North Pole, and even to see Santa Claus, but he does it in a way that keeps the magic just beyond our fingertips and enhances the mystery and awe of the Christmas season.

Somehow, a face-to-face meeting between the girls and Santa Claus would have been almost as bad as the fake Santa Clauses, and yet not to see Santa at all would have been even worse.  The author chose the perfect middle ground—just a hint of Santa that keeps the magic going.

Some of the illustrations by Jocelyn Hobbie will be ones that young readers will hold in their minds for many years.  The illustration on the first page really sets the stage for the story.

The book should make a big splash this Christmas season.
