The Rumpoles and The Barleys:
A Little Story About Being Thankful
Written / Illustrated by Karen Hunt
The first in a series, The Rumpoles and The Barleys tells the tale of two bad mice - Eustace and Prunella
Rumpole. They're spoiled little rich mice, unruly and ungrateful. After being sent to their room, they tumble
into an adventure that takes them far from home where they meet a family of happy country mice named the Barleys.
Learning and repentance ensues. The illustrations for this book are charming, filled with color and cute mice -
I love cute mice. Each page is filled with action and detail that will bring a child back to the book again and
again just to look at the pictures. In fact, the bright, lively cover made my eight-year-old grab it from my book
pile and ask for a read aloud. The story definitely contains enough action and tension to make the very clear
"lesson" element more palatable. And each character is made distinct in voice and behavior, which also adds
interest and enjoyment. It would definitely be a welcome addition to a discussion on thankfulness and a cheery
book for a cozy parent-child read. |
