Runaway Radish /
El Rabano que Escapo
by Janice Levy
Illustrated by Sydney Wright
This story of an errant radish is reminiscent of the story of the Gingerbread Boy, but great fun for the
little ones.
The Night of the Radishes is an annual festival held on the evening of December 23rd in Oaxaca, Mexico. One of the
highlights of the festival is the contest featuring sculpted radishes. Don Pedro wants to carve the best radish
sculpture of all, but one radish just doesn't want to be carved, and escapes from Don Pedro. It sings, "Places to go,
people to see. Out of my way, you can't carve ME."
Don Pedro begins the chase, and as the radish bumps into a burro, knocking the basket off its back, the burro joins
the chase. Eventually, nearly everyone in town joins in, as the marketplace is turned topsy-turvy. The joyful chase
will have children laughing out loud as they cheer for the radish. Fast action and lively text are highlighted by the
clever, colorful illustrations by Sydney Wright.
The text is in English at the top of the page, and repeated in Spanish at the bottom of the page, with vocabulary
words in both languages in the back of the book. Sure to be a favorite with kids, this book would be a wonderful
addition to the pre-school and elementary school library, or as a supplement to home school, with an easy
introduction to a new language. |
