Savvy

by Ingrid Law

Mibs Beaumont is just about to turn thirteen, and that's the age when the Beaumont family members find out what their savvy is. Only the family members from her mother's side of the family have magical abilities that they call savvy, and each one is different.  Mibs' brother Rocket generates his own electricity, and can light up a room or zap someone. Her brother Fish can make hurricanes, and that caused them to have to move away from the sea. One grandmother could capture radio programs and keep them in quart canning jars to release and listen to again. Mibs is anxious to find out what her savvy will be. It's unpredictable and uncontrollable.

Then her father is in an auto accident, and the kids are left with Grandpa Bomba and Miss Rosemary, the pastor's wife while Momma and Rocket rush to the hospital. The rest of the kids are so worried about Poppa, and Mibs decides to stow away on a Bible salesman's bus to find her way to the hospital. Fish and Samson get the same idea and they are off on an unplanned adventure. Mibs' savvy has started to manifest itself but she must keep it a secret.

Ingrid Law has an innovative way with language...it's like nothing you have read before...crisp, colorful, fun with lots of action, big problems, and a final happy ending.  Highly recommended for tweeners, or for read-aloud family time.
