Sergio Makes a Splash
by Edel Rodriguez
Illustrated by Edel Rodriguez
Sergio is a penguin who loves water as long as it's shallow. When his school takes a field trip to the sea, Sergio
knows exactly how he feels: scared. When all his friends leap fearlessly into the sea, Sergio must find the courage
to overcome his fears and find fun even in deep water. I loved the gentle and amusing message about fears, fun, and
the warm help found in friends. The illustrations are simple with an interesting palette of navy, white, orange and
aqua - definitely not your ordinary picks - which give it a slightly vintage look. Even in their simplicity, they do
a wonderful job of showing Sergio's unique approach to penguin life, creating a book sure to bring smiles to the
reader and maybe a giggle or two. With its simple, direct prose and warm look at a common childhood problem, this
book has all the makings of a classic. I enjoyed it from beginning to end. |
