Sleepytown Beagles! Oh Brother!
by Timothy Glass
This is a cute premise that is not executed as well as it could be. It tells the tale of three Beagles who get a
fourth Beagle added to their family. The youngest Beagle, Panda, is not thrilled to give up her spot as the baby
of the family. As Panda struggles to accept her baby brother, her owner, Ben, finds out that he is going to have
a baby sister. Ben is upset because he’d rather have a brother. But the wise old Beagles teach him, and Panda,
that having siblings is the best gift in life and soon they will love having a baby brother or sister.
The idea is cute but the sentiment is conveyed too succinctly to really make sense to young children. The
book also has a fatal flaw on the 4th page when Glass writes, "After that there is a picnic in the Sleepytown
Park with all you can eat, and you never gain any weight." This sentence is clearly written by an adult for
adults. No young child should be counting calories or grams of fat. Glass would do well to find a good editor
and re-release the Sleepytown Beagle series. |
