The World of Quest
Book I
by Jason T Kruse
Is this manga? It reads from left to right, is in color and written and drawn by a Western writer... well, it is
a graphic novel and published by Yen Press! The land of Odyssia is in trouble again, and young Prince Nestor
knows exactly who is going to save everybody. After all, he has done it before, twenty years ago, so why not
now? But Quest has retired and does not want to be troubled by an eleven-year-old who knows about a magic weapon.
Nor does he wish to go up against Lord Spite, the Snarls, Katastrophe or Nestor’s mother... people might find
out why he was banished in the first place!
Just the thing for all readers who think manga has to be about big eyes and tiny noses, flowers and demons.
This has far more in common with traditional American comics than anything else and combines a fairy tale kingdom
with modern humor, some gross-out goo and some rather neat imagination. I particularly liked the composite
monster, animated buildings and laconic style. It’s a quick read, but all the better for not being long winded
like too much conventional fantasy. In fact, if you think fantasy has to be verbose and manga has to be
Japanese, then this book will come as something as a cliché-buster, and that has GOT to be a good thing. Bravo
