Lynn Montgomery's text and Terrie Redding's illustrations provide us with a delightful
little story about "Butt Ugly"—later to be named "Fred"—plus a few wonderful
adjectives.
Butt is born the smallest of the litter and is labeled Butt Ugly. Butt Ugly experiences
the demeaning situations that some children experience because they are a little different.
The reader (and the young listeners) will be heartened by the ending of the story when
a little boy chooses Butt Ugly for his very own.
Every odd page is filled with a beautiful illustration that depicts the plight of Butt
Ugly—that is, all the pages except the very last one. Young listeners (as well as
older readers) will come away with the idea that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.
Anyone who has ever cheered for the underdog (no pun intended), will cheer for Butt Ugly's
reversal of fortune. This is a delightful book for the youngsters and provides a lesson we
adults can appreciate.
