Fanny
by Author/Illustrator: Holly Hobbie
Even if you never read the first word of Fanny, the illustrations alone would make you fall in love with
this book. Fanny is a little girl with a very creative approach to life, starting with her own clothes and hair.
I'm almost certain I've seen my own daughter in a similar outfit of tutu, oddly worn headband and sneakers when
she was in preschool. Young Fanny has a problem: she wants one of the glitzy, glamourous, oh so popular teen
dolls that her friends have and her mother dislikes. So Fanny decides to make her own, and Annabelle is born.
It's love at first sight between Fanny and Annabelle, but it takes a bit longer for her trendy friends to
appreciate Annabelle's unique qualities. For a while that makes even Fanny doubt her new doll.
I liked a great many things about the book, including its focus on not getting caught up in trends, when going
your own way can be so much more interesting; but I have to admit, I don't know many preschoolers who can sew
their own dolly. If you don't mind that rather long stretch of artistic license, this is a charming book with
illustrations that will make you smile every time you read it. And as a special bonus, the book comes with a
darling Annabelle paper doll—I expect this book will be a boundless hit. |
