Emma Dodd shows how illustrations combined with a few lines of text can produce a lively book for
young readers in I Don't Want a Posh Dog!
A young girl explains the various kinds of dogs she doesn't want in a search for the kind she does
want. Each kind of dog that she rejects makes sense. For example, a child doesn't need a dog that
requires beauty treatment suited for a movie starlet. Even very young readers (the publishers
recommendation is for ages 2-5) can see why the descriptions of the dogs rejected would not be a
good mix for a young child.
What kind of dog does she want (and frankly needs)? Read the book and see her decision and see
if she isn't like the little girl in the car commercial—a very smart little girl.
Since the author was in full control of both text and illustrations, she was able to produce this
entertaining book with a message to young readers (a message that parents may well heed.)
