I Need My Monster
by Amanda Noll
Illustrated by Howard McWilliam
When Ethan's monster under the bed decides to go fishing for a little vacation, Ethan doesn't know
what to do. How can he sleep at night without his scary monster? Soon a parade of possible replacements
show up but sometimes a boy just needs the monster he's used to. This is definitely an unusual take on
the monster under the bed story since Ethan likes the fact that his usual monster is extra scary. The
prose is nicely done with plenty of exciting detail, as the monsters rasp and slurp and even mouth-breathe
a bit. Still, the illustrations are really my favorite part of the book. The colors are gorgeous—dark
and creepy—while the actual monsters are a charming combination of spooky and hysterically funny. I
also loved the range of expressions on Ethan's face as he interviews his possible monster replacements.
I Need My Monster is, without a doubt, the most unusual bedtime book I've seen—don't read
it without a nightlight! |
