Inside the Magic, Keyholders 3
by Debbie Dadley and Marcia Thornton Jones
Illustrated by Adam Stower
In this third entry in the Keyholder series, the three young keyholders are facing a terrible
problem. Their mentor, Mr. Leery, has been kidnapped by the Queen of the Boggarts. The keyholders
have to enter the magical realm and brave all sorts of dangers to get him back. As with the other
two books in the series, the plot is simple and straightforward. The young characters must learn
to work together to accomplish the task and these three don't work together well. The quest nature
of this plot kept reader attention well, and the line illustrations by Adam Stower really helped
make the children and creatures feel more real. I'm still not completely certain I like these
three children. Luke's self-absorbed ego and Natalie's foolish bravado are much alike and push
the characters into much of their trouble, and sometimes it's hard to be completely convinced
they deserve to get out of it, with their squabbling and whining. I must admit, it's a gutsy
choice to flout the "writing rule" to make your main character likeable, and one that may
ultimately pay off for the series. Certainly Dadley and Jones have the experience to know what
their readers enjoy. The fantasy creatures are interesting and always surprising with their very
human traits and character weaknesses as well. For a young chapter book lover with a taste for
fantasy, the magic and the quest are sure to take the reader on an engaging journey. |
