Johnny Big Ears,
The Feel Good Friend
by John Paul Padilla
Johnny Big Ears, The Feel Good Friend is a little book with a big message. Published as an easy reader for
third grade level, in my opinion, the best use of this book would be as a read aloud book for younger children. As
we all know, every child gets teased about something, and this book may help kids put teasing into perspective
before it happens. It would be a great conversation starter at family time to discover each child's differences
and discuss ways in which we are all different and all the same.
Padilla's message deals with self-acceptance and how to handle the inevitable teasing. I was surprised to find
that all the characters in the book seem to have a name that refers to their differences: "Johnny Big-Ears,"
"Charlie Freckles,' and even the teacher is called "Mrs. Wrinkles." Johnny is way more optimistic and tolerant than
most children would be in a teasing situation but it does convey a positive message.
This book should be in the pre-school library, and even part of the curriculum. It would be a help to any child,
but especially handicapped children, and perhaps even a lesson to those who would tease and bully. |
