Young readers will have fun exploring the art of doing nothing along with the two boys
in this clever picture book. Frankie and Sal have already played a ton of games, painted a
zillion pictures and baked and eaten a ton of cookies. So, what's left to do? Nothing!
The challenge is to do not just "nothing" but ten seconds of "nothing." Can the boys do
it? Can they sit in two chairs and not move an inch? Sure. If they use their imaginations,
the boys think it will be a piece of cake to remain totally still for ten seconds.
First they pretend to be statues, but that doesn't work. Then they pretend to be trees
and then two big buildings. Both times, due to very active imaginations, the boys fail. Can
they hold their breaths and not blink? Will that do the trick? NO!
Finally, Frankie and Sal realize something you probably knew already. Kids just can't sit
still and DO NOTHING. It's totally not in their make-up!
Movie animation expert Tony Fucile creates some splendid illustrations to accompany his
humorous tale that demonstrates that the Zen-like art of doing (or trying to do) nothing
isn't as easy as one would think.
