The Lion's Share
A Tale of Halving Cake and Eating it Too

by Matthew McElligott

This clever story teaches a little division and multiplication as the reader follows the misadventures of a group of greedy animals who are invited to the King of the Jungle's special dinner party.

The lion's guests not only misbehave during the meal, but when dessert is served they start dividing it in such a manner that the smallest creature gets little more than a crumb and Lion ends up with nothing at all.

Realizing what they have done, the animals decide to make up for the faux pas by baking a new cake for the lion. But when the ant makes a single cake, the beetle decides to make two cakes, and the frog doubles the number to four cakes. With the "competition" in full swing, by the time you get the last animal, the elephant, the total has reached 256 cakes!

The "halving" and "doubling" lessons here won't be missed by young readers and hopefully the message about bad table manners will also hit home.
