The Princess and the Ziz
Fourth book in the Ziz series

by Jacqueline Jules
Illustrated by Katherine Janus Kahn

Once again children's author, poet, and elementary school librarian Jacqueline Jules brings another tale of the Ziz, a gigantic yellow bird who seems to always get himself into trouble. In The Princess and the Ziz, the fourth book in this series, the bird has been given the task of being a companion to Princess Magda, the daughter of King Solomon, who is being kept in a tower on a faraway island.  But Princess Magda isn't content with just watching the marvelous bird or talking to him; she wants to see a python in the jungle. Soon, the Ziz is flying her all over the world to see marvelous things. But when the princess meets a handsome scribe, the Ziz becomes jealous and refuses to take her back to visit the young man. The princess becomes so sad the king summons the Ziz to find out what is wrong. But everything turns out well in the end, and the Ziz learns that jealousy can make other people unhappy and that friendships are meant to be shared.

The story is one young children will enjoy. As in all of the book about the Ziz, Katherine Janus Kahn's bright watercolors bring the tale to life. For the most part, the pictures are wrapped around the text, often in large double-page illustrations. There are always little details for children to pick out—animals, flowers, birds, designs—that make opening the book exciting every time the story is read.

The first book Jacqueline Jules wrote about the Ziz was The Hardest Word, which brought the lessons of forgiveness and atonement stressed by the Jewish High Holidays. Subsequent books illustrated other moral lessons through the antics of this colorful bird. Ironically, the premise behind The Princess and the Ziz was a story that Jules found in several collections of Jewish fairy tales and folk tales. That story was her first introduction to a giant yellow bird who brought King Solomon's daughter the man she would marry. Jules named him the Ziz and a series was born.

As always, a visit from the Ziz is a welcome one!  The Princess and the Ziz will delight young children as a picture book shared with their parents or later as a book they could read on their own.
