The Wrong Side of Magic, Keyholders 4
by Debbie Dadey and Marcia Thornton Jones
The three young keyholders are back and this time the magic is taking over their town. Their
mentor, Mr. Leery, is still too sick to be much help but something strange is going on with all
the grownups. The teachers are being especially mean and only the keyholders suspect this might
be another evil plan by the Boggart queen. The kids have to work together if they're going to
figure out how to get the grown-ups back to normal. First, I love the
Invasion of the
Body Snatchers feel to this story. What could be scarier for a kid than to have all
the adults turn crazy mean? I liked the interesting twist the authors made on a very old magical
notion. I'm still hoping for a little character growth in the three keyholders, as the bickering
does get a bit old. And I'm hoping we don't have to wait out the entire series to find out what
the mystery is about the magical rat who is one of the helpers the children rely on. We've had
hints for three books now that she's more than she seems but the kids still don't seem the least
bit interested in learning what she really is (this despite the fact that they once saw a house
cat turn into a griffin—who know what a rat might turn into?) However, though as an adult
I find the slow pace of the series movement a little frustrating, my ten year old thinks they're
just great reading "snack food"—fast and fun. Certainly the combination of magic and
mystery in this particular book was very engaging and I'm certain it'll keep readers turning
pages quickly. |
