I Can Save the Ocean!
The Little Green Monster Cleans Up the Beach

by Alison Inches
Illustrated by Viviana Garofoli

This picture book teaches children four years of age and older the importance of caring for the ocean and keeping beaches clean.

Part of the Little Green Book series, this story features Max the Little Green Monster who loves the beach. But, after enjoying a picnic on the shore, Max leaves behind a mess to go scuba diving. While swimming along, Max finds plastic bags, broken toys and even an old tire on the seabed.

Realizing where the trash comes from, the Little Green Monster returns to shore to clean up his mess. He then goes around the beach reminding others there's no littering allowed and Max even reminds boaters to not throw junk overboard.

When he gets home, Max urges everyone in his neighborhood to recycle so garbage doesn't end up in the ocean. "Pollution at home is bad for the ocean, too," he tells everyone.

I Can Save the Ocean is an excellent picture book that underscores the importance of protecting the ocean by keeping unwanted trash away from the beach and out of storm drains. It is a lesson young people can't learn any too soon.
