My Pal Victor
by Diane Gonzales
Illustrated by Robert L. Sweetland
My Pal Victor is the story of two young boys who do everything
together. It seems to be about two ordinary boys, leaving
until the last page, the astonishing fact that one of the boys is
disabled. Dominic knows what makes a great friend. He joins
in as Victor makes up great stories that play like movies in their
heads. They enjoy jokes and swimming together, and Victor cheers
Dominic on as he plays baseball. Dominic
is in action on every page, and Victor is cheering him on.
This story shows that the boys enjoy each other's company and appreciate
each other just as they are and accept each other without question. This
book should be in every early education library, and part of the
pre-school curriculum. It is an outstanding character
building read-aloud for bedtime or family time. The colored
pencil drawings of Bob Sweetland capture the charm and warmth
of this story, and the visual panorama makes the story realistic.
