What happens when one outgrows his home is the
theme of this picture book. In this instance the “home”
is a hole in the ground occupied by a group of furry rodents.
As the seven little rodents become “big”
rodents, their domicile no longer meets their needs. Seeking a larger
residence, they go above ground and begin a series of misadventures.
The rodents first discover that placing a cup,
glove, boot or straw over one’s head does not constitute a
“safe” hiding place. Then they encounter a large puddle,
a mean dog and other obstacles that present challenges in their
quest for a new home.
When they find a washing machine and climb inside,
it doesn’t take the rodents long to figure out that a spinning
drum isn’t going to make a good house even though there’s
plenty of room for everyone.
Will they ever find new living quarters? Perhaps. You’ll have
to read this picture book to discover how the quest finally ends.
Children three and older will find this humorous story quite enjoyable,
and you might use it as a way of discussing what happens when a
person grows up. Not only does one outgrow his or her clothing,
but other changes await the individual as well!
