Kelly Bennett's story of a boy who finds treasures in everyday
objects is entitled One Day I Went Rambling. Zane uses his imagination
to turn simple objects into treasures-a hubcap becomes a flying
saucer and an old wooden crate becomes Huck Finn's trusty raft.
At first Zane's friends don't quite see the possibilities of the
objects that they find, but eventually Zane is able to awaken their
imagination and they become treasure hunters.
The story will encourage young readers to develop and use their
imagination and apply it just as video game producers and moviemakers
do.
Illustrator Terri Murphy helps greatly in this task of turning on
the imagination as her hubcap does indeed look like a star and a
packing crate could easily pass for a wooden barge-that is if the
imagination is used. This is a great book to introduce the idea
of imagery.
