This picture book for young readers tells the story of a family
who relocated from Cambodia during the war. Dara, the story's narrator,
and her parents and grandmother traveled to Thailand and then to
America, where they settled in Maine.
Lok Yeay, the child's grandmother, loves telling the child about
life back in Cambodia and how one day she hopes to return to see
her brother. Unfortunately, a phone call destroys that dream since
relatives inform the old woman that her brother has passed away.
Now it is up to Dara to help the grieving woman get over her loss
and bring a little joy back into her life.
This is an excellent story that not only provides a little information
about Cambodian culture but also underscores the importance of family
and how it is sometimes necessary for a young person to provide
a shoulder for an elderly relative to lean upon.
