Winter
is on its way and the animals are preparing for the season
of cold and snow. The little bear cub featured here will count
the many creatures he encounters in the forest setting food
aside or adding body fat for the frigid months to come.
There are squirrels collecting acorns, beavers constructing
a dam, deer foraging in a cornfield, and wild turkeys feasting
on ripe, juicy grapes. Bees are storing up honey for the winter,
frogs are feasting on fish, and geese are flying south. After
he is done counting all these woodland critters, little bear
notices the first flakes of snow falling.
There are far too many flakes to count, but the cub doesn’t
mind because now it is time to curl up in the family den with
his mother for a long winter’s snooze.
A different type of counting book with a more extended text
and big, colorful, animal illustrations in autumn hues, this
is an excellent picture book for read aloud sessions with
your toddler. Ashley Wolff is a San Francisco writer/illustrator
who focuses on the natural world in her bear books.
