The
fourth title in this lift-the-flap series by Karen Katz, this
board book shows a number of cute babies discovering members
of the insect world. As you lift the flap in each two page
spread you’ll help the toddlers find ladybugs, green
caterpillars, an itsy-bitsy spider, some very busy bees, teeny-tiny
ants, and a swarm of flickering fireflies.
Katz’s accompanying
illustrations feature nice, large babies dressed in brightly
colored clothing. The flaps are easy to manage and usually
there is more than a single insect pictured, so you can do
a little counting practice as well. The attractiveness of
these “Baby” books is that the oversized images
are easy to focus on and attract a young child’s attention.
For very young children (under seven months) bright, bold
colors and large illustrations are preferable for introducing
them to picture books.
The flaps add
an interactive element which will appeal to a slightly older
child and create some mystery. You can ask, “What’s
behind that cobweb? What’s that flying behind those
flowers?” By combining the flaps with the large illustrations,
Katz has created a book that will hold a child’s attention
for a longer time then the normal board book which often “grows
old” all too quickly.
