Geared
for age 3 to 7, It’s a Seashell Day is a delightful
and beautifully illustrated story of a mother and son who
take a trip to the beach and hunt for seashells. The illustrations
by Elliot Kreloff are simply beautiful, and children will
enjoy his visions of the seaside, sand and beautifully rendered
shells. Dianne Ochiltree’s rhyming verses are a joy
to read and learn, and children will come back to them again
and again. Her verses are also designed to impart practical
information while helping children learn to count.
The author and illustrator have included a special two-page
spread, created by the child in the book to display all the
shells he’s collected, along with their names –
helpful not only for children, but parents. Those pages are
followed by yet another two-page spread that imparts information
on the shells and their uses, and even I learned a few things
that I didn't know before reading this wonderful book.
It’s a Seashell Day is a pure delight -- a
great book to take along on vacations to the beach and share
with a child or group of children. It’s definitely a
book any child would love to read on his/her own, take to
“show and tell” at school, and refer to as they
collect their own seashells. It’s a Seashell Day is
destined to be among many children’s “most cherished”
books.
