It's
Not About You, Mr. Pumpkin
is a delightful book dealing not with goblins and witches,
but with the true meaning of Halloween. The book has wonderful
illustrations, skillfully rendered by Tea Seroya, and written
with informative and non-threatening facts about the origins
of the holiday most all kids love.
The whimsical illustrations skillfully illustrate the author's
explanations of the reason behind the carving of the first
pumpkin. I loved the comment about brushing our teeth so ours
don't fall out. She also explains where the holiday originated
and why the phrase "trick or treat" began. People
long ago believed in evil spirits, and decorated their homes
with frightening objects to scare those spirits away. Many
of the costumes today stem from costumes people wore in olden
times.
I adore the cute illustrations and the delightful way the
author has explained the holiday in easy- to-understand passages
that are often funny and always charming. It's Not About You
Mr. Pumpkin takes the scary out of Halloween, and the author
does a great job of tying the old customs and beliefs to the
new. The author's lyrical writing makes for a fun and delightful
book that is fun to read without being scary or violent, and
one that children will turn to again and again.
