When
Maya wakes up grumpy, she doesn't want to do anything
but grump and grumble.
But her clever (and slightly silly) Gramma can't leave
things like that! This lively book turns into
a battle between silliness and the grumps --
and we know what's going to come out on top! The charming
watercolor illustrations display the hugeness
of Maya's grumpy attitude in her out-of-control
mop of curls. Each page offers something new to see and
imagine. And the vivid colors definitely captivate. The
storyline of wise Gramma
winning over a cranky little girl isn't the most original
I've seen, but it has a kind of cozy familiarity
that makes it appealing just the same. Probably
the one thing that stopped me in my reading tracks was
the use of "crispy" as a synonym for "grumpy."
My daughter found that distracting and so did
I. I assume "crispy" has less cheery connotations at the
author's house than it does at ours. Still,
overall, a cozy fun book with plenty of bounce. |
