This book is the second in the Funny Children's Poems series by the award-winning poet, Leslie C. Halpern, following Rub, Scrub, Clean the Tub: Funny Children's Poems About Self-Image.

Shakes, Cakes, Frosted Flakes is a surprisingly delightful children's book. I volunteer to read weekly to children in a local elementary school, and the children loved the illustrations and poems, and laughed many times in appreciation of the humor throughout. The poems are centered on manners in general and the charming illustrations complement the poems beautifully. The children loved all the poems, and my special favorite is "Lunch Time," which had me laughing out loud when I first read it.

This book is an amusing way to teach the importance of manners and proper nutrition to children. As an added bonus, the author includes a special section at the end of the book about learning manners and new vocabulary words that parents can discuss and share with children.

This will make a wonderful addition to any child's library and an excellent present for anyone who has young children. I feel the lasting value of this book is the ease in which children can learn the importance of table manners and watching what they eat, while enjoying a really fun book. The original and fanciful illustrations only add to the enjoyment.

It's been a long time since a children's book made me laugh, but this book did, and made me a fan of Leslie Halpern. She has a rare talent for cute poems that carry a purpose. Parents and children alike will love this book, as well as her first release in the series.
