When
baby Tootie mysteriously grows her first teeth - two fangs
- her big brother becomes curious. When Tootie bites everything
and everyone in sight, he gets downright suspicious. After
noticing his sister's unusual hairline, inability to sleep
through the night, and preference for blood-red foods, he
concludes she must be a vampire baby.
Unfortunately, wearing garlic necklaces isn't quite enough
to ward off his sister's insatiable desire to bite. His parents
assure him his sister is going through the normal teething
process. Therefore, he takes matters into his own hands and
makes a sign: "Wanted, good home for vampire baby."
He carries the sign around a store until he meets a potential
vampire family to take his baby sister to a more fitting environment.
In the end, however, he decides he's better off keeping the
vampire baby safe at home.
This beautiful hardcover picture book should delight young
children with infant siblings. The story is fun and clever,
though parents and teachers might have to clarify the metaphor
of a teething infant to a vampire baby, and that the family
is dressed up in costumes for Halloween. The lesson learned
at the end of the story is appropriate for this kind of book
and may open family discussions. Colorful illustrations fit
well with the story and add another layer of humor, such as
the canine picture hanging in the doctor's office when baby
Tootie gets an examination of her new teeth.
This book arrives in time for Halloween, but can be enjoyed
throughout the year as well.
