The "Hero
Dog" series is particularly good at getting reluctant
readers interested in books. The dog featured in this Level
One reader served in the military and his special assignment
was using his highly developed sense of smell to find weapons
and explosives.
Besides working at vehicle checkpoints, Gabe would often visit
hospitals to cheer up wounded soldiers. The dog and his handler,
Chuck, spent 13 months in Iraq, went on 200 missions and discovered
explosives 26 times. Gabe received a number of awards for
his hard work.
Teachers and librarians will want to have a copy of this book
handy to pique the interest of any child who loves animals
and may not be overly enthusiastic about reading. This book
may well change that.
