The

Rebecca
Williams dreams of becoming a lawyer like her father, but in 1870s
Boston this is just not possible. When handsome and charming Daniel
Thornton arrives to settle a will he sweeps her off her feet, and
even though she does not love him, the new life he offers sounds inviting.
But, however headstrong and independent she seemed back in Boston
society, the Outback is a very different place and nothing she does
is right. She gets along fine with Daniel's sweet mother, but his
father is another matter, and his ways seem straight out of the Old
Testament. Can she make a go of her marriage and life on the cattle
station, and will Bertram ever come to like her?
Rebecca
will need all her faith to endure, and this is a compelling story
that ought to appeal to readers of inspirational, historical and
romance fiction. In its theme of a young woman coming to live in
a strange environment there is even a hint of the gothic about it,
sans the supernatural. But there is some of the frisson of a "female
in jeopardy" plot, as Rebecca has to cope with hostility and danger
but in a more down to earth, realistic way which is likely to appeal
more to the modern reader. This is, as far as I can judge, a fairly
convincing picture of life on a cattle station at this time and
an accurate description of the way Aboriginals were viewed, and
how they viewed the white settlers and their religion. Gripping,
uplifting and enjoyable - I will want to read the whole trilogy.
