Message in a Bottle

by Nicholas Sparks
Read by Bruce Boxleitner and Kathleen Quinlan

Tried-and-true fans or first time readers won't be disappointed in this audio version of best selling author Nicholas Sparks' 1998 release. Opposites - and stubborn ones at that - attract in this moving novel of intertwined struggles to find new loves after losing deep ones. Theresa, a Boston-based syndicated newspaper columnist raising an only child, is moving on from an adulterous husband. Garrett, grappeling with early widowerhood, is living an independent, testosterone-filled life on the sea in Wilmington. The two are brought together by fate, and their love is ultimately dictated by it. This is one of the best take-a-chance on love books written. If you want to find the meaning of love and self-discovery, try this tale of two people who by day are contrasts, but by night live by the same song: yearning.

Beautifully read and dramatized by Bruce Boxleitner, best known for his roles in the television series Babylon 5 and Scarecrow and Mrs. King, and Kathleen Quinlan who was featured in the films Independence Day and Apollo 13. I especially liked the last third of the audio, where miscommunication, separation and regret lead to a reunion as erotic and joyful as it is sorrowful. A powerful example of risking one's heart for love, yet which still demonstrates the cliche that we are all ‘ships that pass in the night’.
