From the beginning
of the audio, it sounded interesting and hurried off in an exciting
direction, but it took a wrong turn for me shortly into the second
CD. Paramedic Peter Webster rescues a woman from an accident in
the beginning of the story. Her memory continues to haunt him and
he begins a love affair that leads to marriage and the birth of
a daughter, Rowan. Sheila, his wife, is beautiful and fun but the
darker side of her alcoholism plagues the relationship until she
has another car accident and is sent away to avoid a jail sentence.
Years later he contacts her to help with their daughter, who is
experiencing some of the same symptoms as her mother.
Laced with
dramatic rescue scenes throughout the story, the love of a wonderful
man, a tormented wife and an emotionally charged daughter; the family
drama begins.
Unfortunately,
for me the story would have been better told by a woman than a man,
even though it was told from a man’s perspective. I was a
little annoyed by the reader’s voice. It made it difficult
to get through the book. But, I think Shreve fans will probably
enjoy it just the same.
