If you have read Napoleon’s Pyramids then you will know all about adventurer Ethan Gage and his magical medallion. Now he is back for a third helping of Indiana Jones style adventures as Napoleon launches his next campaign in the direction of Israel. This time Gage is on the trail of an ancient Egyptian scroll said to reveal the mysteries of the universe…

…which of course he needs to get hold of before his arch enemy does or the scroll will be used for exactly the opposite reasons. This is all entertaining stuff that reminds me somewhat of the Dennis Wheatley books I used to devour during my formative years and the pace has picked up somewhat, which is a boon. I found that too much information about the Freemasons tended to slow down the pace in the first book but there is less of that in here and more action, which suits this type of novel better. It does get off to a somewhat slow start, but picks up speed as it goes along despite the odd potted bit of arcane lore. There is real history in here as well in the shape of Napoleon’s campaigns but not a lot; this is a story to read just for fun. One to appeal to the many fans of Da Vinci Code-style thrillers.
