Young Maile
Manoa is an unlikely heroine of the 60's. Like many impoverished
children, Maile has big dreams of living large and going beyond
her small world. She dreams of being a success in music. She literally
sings for her supper and because of her beautiful voice she is pressured
to turn over her money to her large embittered family for their
upkeep. Finally, she saves enough and gets the break she has been
waiting for and travels to Salzburg, Austria to further her career.
This is the
story of a young girl's dream, realized. The setting of beautiful
Hawaii and her life there causes the reader to dream along with
her and the only thing that would have made this story any better
would have been to set it to music on an audio.
I read this
book with much enthusiasm and felt that I too was a part of Maile's
dream completely when I finished the book. It is genuinely a feel
good book and I would recommend it to children and teens as well.
