Noir crime fiction from Barcelona, Spain. Carlos Zanon is better
known for his poetry, and certainly there are some poetic qualities
evident in this fast moving suspense novel. Zanon has a unique voice
in literature.
Brothers, Epi and Alex Dalmau live in the Barrio in Barcelona, an
area saturated with immigration, alcohol and drugs...an explosive
mixture in any locale. Epi is in love with a girl from South America
with tattooed blue eyelids, but she seems to prefer his good friend
Tanveer, a Moroccan.
Early one morning, at neighborhood bar, Epi jerks his hammer from
his work duffle bag, and in a fit of jealous rage, bashes Tanveer's
skull in. The only other people in the bar along with the bartender,
are Alex Dalmau and a Pakistani who just came through to use the
restroom. Now Epi is a man on the run, who must find his love, Tiffany,
and explain to her why he did this horrendous deed.
This no-holds-barred novel gives the reader a whole new perspective
through the mind of a murderer as the brothers' thoughts are voiced.
As a superfluous parallel plot, Epi and Tanveer are involved in
torturing a prostitute.
Zanon reports on the new era of modern unrest in Barcelona with
absolute clarity. This is a part of the city that tourists never
see. Alex's search for Epi, trying to convince everyone the Pakistani
killed Tanveer, and the police interest in solving the murder make
for fast action and escalating suspense. This is Zanon's first book
to be translated into English, but I will certainly be watching
for more from this talented author.
